British Foreign Office has placed eleven new countries to its official advisory register regarding the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the incidence of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only last month, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after multiple serious cases like the tragic demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not meant for drinking.

While it is naturally produced during the production of spirits, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the distillation process.

But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.
