The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World

The seasonal content update for Minecraft has touched down β€” and it features the initial fresh armament added to the game since the mace made its debut. The spear is now available and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces several new features and updates centered around animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the creators had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," stated a lead developer. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both handled superbly when we ran our trials and also looked good for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your companions on horseback, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move ideally crafted for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a primary use cases for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and get more damage [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The wild enjoyment isn't limited to there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for equipping the wings and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.

In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it should be made an competitive event immediately.

Another major addition in this new update is the Nautilus. This underwater creature, which is modeled after the seashells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it transport you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no requirement to come up for air for fresh air.

The other inclusions are largely things that want to kill you, as is the way of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you are able to take care of the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount β€” or the standard version, for that matter β€” with a spiky fish.

"We've been thinking about this issue on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the developer explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for underwater mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus concept art looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you discover underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some long-overdue changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse bodies of water while mounted on a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the workbench, so you can give your horse the best defense it deserves.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

Overall, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear by itself β€” and the potential for chaos β€” would have constituted a major improvement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
