RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
