Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Squad While Joe McCarthy Left Out

Rugby team announcement update

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Ireland team for the autumn internationals, but lock McCarthy misses out.

The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash also miss out due to injury, and full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Leinster prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new member in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".

Following playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains available, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the additional fly-half selected as the coach opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced group of centre choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.

McCarthy is the sole new name in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in two of his province's three United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the skipper does not regain full fitness in time to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
